A Walk Down Memory Lane

Some towns stay with you.

Wadena was part of my childhood, and coming back years later with my parents, husband, and children felt a little surreal.

As a teenager, I don’t think I appreciated everything this town had to offer. I was focused on hanging out with friends and finding excitement.

Now, as a mom, I notice completely different things.

Affordable family fun.

History.

Local restaurants.

Hidden gems.

Places my children might someday remember the same way I do.

Where We Ate

We decided to have dinner at Uptown, and everyone left happy.

I ordered the Boneless Spicy Peach because I wanted to try something different.

The flavor was spicy, sweet, savory, and saucy.

It had enough heat to notice, but it wasn’t the kind of spice that leaves your mouth burning.

It was a little too spicy for my younger children, but my son thought it tasted great on his salad.

I ordered enough to bring leftovers home, which is always a bonus.

Uptown is children friendly and the prices were priced for a family night out.
Specials: If you’re planning a Wednesday visit, keep in mind they offer $1 bone-in wings from 5–9 p.m., making it an affordable night out for families.

What We Loved

These are the little things that stood out during our visit.

• Watching my children explore places I once knew.

• Sitting around a dinner table with three generations together.

• Realizing how differently I see small towns as an adult.

• Slowing down enough to enjoy the details.

Strolling Through Town

After dinner, we walked downtown.

As we passed Cozy Theater, memories started flooding back.

I remembered getting pizza at Larry’s Pizza and Pizza Ranch with friends.

Back then, I probably thought there wasn’t much to do.

Looking back, I think I simply wasn’t paying attention.

Sometimes it takes becoming a parent to appreciate the simple things.

Hidden Gems Worth Seeing

Cozy Theater

$5 movies on Tuesday afternoons.

The popcorn still smells exactly the way I remember.

Walking into the lobby instantly brought back memories from my childhood.

Some places don’t need to change.

They just need another generation to enjoy them.

Sunnybrook Park

Walking trails.

Camping.

And buffalo.

Seeing animals that large through my children’s eyes was exciting.

It also gave us a chance to talk about history, conservation, and the role buffalo once played in America.

Wadena Train Depot

Even though Wadena isn’t an Amtrak stop anymore, the depot remains open.

Visitors can learn more about the town, attend events, and experience a preserved piece of local history.

Little Round Still

We didn’t make it there this trip, but it’s already on my list for next time.

Locally crafted drinks.

A fun atmosphere.

And another reason to spend a little extra time downtown.

If You Only Have Four Hours in Wadena

If I were planning a quick afternoon in Wadena, these would be my stops.

Sunnybrook Park 9:00Am

This would probably be my first recommendation for families. The walking trails are beautiful, there is camping nearby, and seeing the buffalo never gets old. Watching my children light up when they see animals that large is part of the fun. It also opens the door to conversations about history, conservation, and the role buffalo played in our country.

Wadena Train Depot 11:00AM

Even though Wadena is no longer an Amtrak stop, the historic depot still welcomes visitors. It’s a wonderful place to learn more about the town’s history, attend community events, and appreciate a piece of Wadena’s past that has been preserved.

Wadena Uptown 12:30PM

Grab lunch at The Uptown, a local favorite serving burgers, wings, salads, and comfort food classics. Wednesday visitors can take advantage of their $1 bone-in wing special from 5–9 PM, and the Spicy Peach boneless wings are worth trying if you’re looking for a unique flavor combination.

Cozy Theater (afternoon show)

For only $5 on Tuesday afternoons, this is an easy addition to a family outing. Plus, the popcorn alone is worth stopping for.

Little Round Still 5:00PM

I didn’t make it there on this visit, but it is already on my list for next time. It looks like a fun place to gather with friends, enjoy locally crafted drinks, and experience another side of Wadena’s downtown atmosphere.

Amber’s Memory

As a teenager, I thought Wadena was boring.

As a mom, I realized I simply wasn’t paying attention.

At sixteen, I was looking for excitement.

At thirty-four, I’m looking for affordable family fun, history, and places my children will remember years from now.

Maybe Wadena didn’t change.

Maybe I did.

Worth the Stop?

Absolutely.

Wadena surprised me.

Coming back reminded me that some towns deserve a second look.

Especially when you’re seeing them through your children’s eyes.

Planning Our Next Visit

Next time, we’ll stay longer.

We’ll watch a movie at the Cozy Theater, spend more time downtown, stop at Main Street Distillery, and continue creating memories in a town that helped shape part of my childhood.

Because revisiting places from your past isn’t really about reliving old memories.

It’s about making new ones with the people you love most.

Have you visited Wadena?

What places would you add to our next adventure?

I’d love to hear your recommendations.
